Registration Deadline Approaching for United Power Charity Softball Tournament Proceeds Benefit Thanksgiving Food Basket Program

The United Power Employee Association will host a charity softball tournament on Aug. 21 at the Brighton Sports Complex to benefit the cooperative’s Giving at Thanksgiving program. Giving at Thanksgiving provides food baskets in the fall to families in need and is funded and coordinated entirely by employees of United Power.

On Aug. 21, two recreational divisions of up to eight teams each will compete: one men’s slow-pitch division and one co-ed slow-pitch division. Teams of up to 20 members can compete for a $200 entry fee. The registration deadline is Aug. 13 and space is limited. Registration information, rules and other details are available at www.unitedpower.com. The tournament is also asking for volunteers to umpire, score and provide tournament support. Please call Jennifer at 303-637-1340 to volunteer.

Giving at Thanksgiving food baskets provide a Thanksgiving meal as well as other pantry staples to families facing hardships. United Power employees traditionally fund the Giving at Thanksgiving program through an employee auction and other small fundraisers throughout the year. These fundraising efforts allow them to provide about 75 food baskets to local families.

“We hope to see the program grow to provide meals and other pantry items to well over 100 families by adding the softball tournament to our fundraising efforts,” said Jason Maxey, president of the United Power Employee Association.

After their annual fundraising efforts, employees purchase food from local grocers to provide the food baskets for needy families in the service territory. On a Saturday in November, United Power employees and their families spend the day assembling and delivering the boxes of food. The boxes include enough goodies to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal, and enough additional food to stock the pantry for another week.
