Commerce City police hope to ‘tackle’ high school football players

COMMERCE CITY – There are no shoulder pads or helmets, no mascots or pep band. But there will be plenty of screaming fans and exciting plays when the Police Department takes on the local high school football team in an upcoming fundraiser to benefit Commerce City youth.

Students, parents and community members are invited to root for the team of their choice when the Commerce City police take on the Adams City High School football team in a Cops vs. Kids flag football game.

“This is a great way for community members to get involved and have fun while helping a great cause,” said Commerce City Mayor Paul Natale. “I hope we can fill the stands on game day and really make a statement while having a great time!”

Game day is Saturday, Dec. 4 at Adams City High School’s stadium. Advance tickets are $2 for students, $4 for adults. Tickets at the gate are $3 for students, $5 for adults. Tickets are available at the Commerce City Recreation Center, 6060 E. Parkway Drive, and from city police officers and the high school resource officer.

Cops vs. Kids is a national program that brings together youth and local law enforcement members in ways that help build positive relationships. Cops vs. Kids is also part of Commerce City’s EPIC program, an umbrella program that offers fun, healthy and low-cost activities for youth and teens as an alternative to crime and violence.

City police officers have been practicing for the game off-duty and are eager to show their stuff on the gridiron. Adams City’s football players have had an entire season to practice, and are ready to show up the police.

Everybody wins in this game, however, with proceeds benefitting the Commerce City Recreation Center’s Youth Scholarship Fund and Project Present.

The scholarship provides funds for youth who couldn’t otherwise afford to participate in Recreation Center youth programs and activities. Project Present is a Commerce City program that provides holiday gifts and essentials to youth in need at all area elementary schools.

Businesses that have donated to the Cops vs. Kids flag football fundraiser include RAC Transport and the Fraternal Order of Police. Game sponsors are La Casa del Rey restaurant, Commerce City and the Recreation Department’s EPIC program.

If you can’t make the game, but still want to help the cause, you can make a donation or simply buy a game ticket or two.
